CD Reviews

Chase Sanborn certainly knows his way around the trumpet and flugelhorn, and showcases those talents to great effect. The disc is illuminated by sublime statements (‘I Wish You Love’), moments of aching poignancy (‘Never Let Me Go’), edgy mute work (Sanborn’s ‘Rompin’ at The Rex) and references to Charlie Parker (Sanborn’s ‘Consternation’). The other musicians share Sanborn’s wide-ranging sensibilities, responding easily to potent, rapid switches of emphasis. Creativity is front and center here.
Review: Toronto Star

Chase Sanborn’s latest release is a pure delight! It features very fine soloing from the trumpeter, with echos of Clifford Brown and Chet Baker. The recording quality is superb!
Review: International Trumpet Guild Journal

Chase Sanborn is a trumpet/flugelhorn player of exceptional talent, with a warm, inviting tone, fluid lyrical phrasing, and a style that always swings. Sanborn’s latest CD, Perking UP, places him in duo and trio settings with a group of world-class musicians: Mark Eisenman on piano, Reg Schwager on guitar and Steve Wallace on bass. Together, they create music that is sometimes cooking, sometimes floating, and always communicating on a very intense level. This is a delightful performance!

Dennis Najoom (Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra)

John Weir (Orsi & Weir Woodwinds)

Not only is the playing great, but on this recording you can really hear the woody-ness of the bass, the strings on the guitar and the breathiness of the horn. It sounds like jazz should sound-nice and swinging!
Andrew Scott (Toronto, ON)

Chase Sanborn has such a wonderful tone matched by great technique and ideas.
Frank Mathewson (Toronto, ON)

I can’t think of anyone, living or dead, who has a sound I like as much as Chase Sanborn. His intonation and attacks are killer!
