*NEW* CS Signature Zebrawood Cup Mute
Here we are at the intersection of art and function, where the perfection of nature joins forces with the ingenuity of human craftsmanship. This handcrafted trumpet cup mute is is made entirely of Zebrawood, a Central American hardwood with a distinctive striped grain, thus the name.
Zebrawood is used in guitars and other wooden instruments (not to mention Mercedes dashboards). The resonant quality of the wood allows it to vibrate with the vibrations of the horn, enhancing rather than stifling the tone. It produces a characteristic cup mute sound but with greater depth and body. This is a soloist’s mute, and in that context it is a pure joy. (A short demo recording below contrasts the sound of this mute with a Stone Lined cup mute.)
The CS Zebrawood Cup Mute is made in the US by Facet Mutes Inc. Facet produces a full line of mutes in many different woods, each with its own distinctive tonal characteristic. I spent some time with the full range, and chose this one as my signature model because I feel the cup benefits most from the use of tone wood construction. Among the cups I compared, Zebrawood offered the best response and a true cup mute sound. Zebrawood is also one of the most striking in appearance, with the striped grain pattern emphasizing the geometry of the design.
The mute weighs just over four ounces. For comparison, a standard Stone Lined cup mute weighs just over three ounces; the difference is negligible. The price of the mute reflects the design, material and construction costs inherent in an artisanal product. Everyone who sees and hears it agrees it is worth every penny (and shipping is included in the price). The construction is flawless, the finish is spectacular, the sound is gorgeous and it is guaranteed for life in normal use.
